Defense of Willemstad
Safely protected against the water, hidden between the foliage, and filled with history. The stately building constructed by Prince Maurits in 1623 formed the heart of the Defense of Willemstad. This is where you can discover the rich history of the Dutch Royals of Orange and the wars against the French. Start your quest by listening to the stories of forts and fortresses in the Mauritshuis. Also, visit the exhibit presented by the local history society ‘De Willemstad’.
Combine your visit with a river crossing to Numansdorp by taking the waterbus or ferry Anna, and continue your bicycle tour or hike there. Rent a boat and cruise the rivers Haringvliet or Mark by yourself. Wander through the picturesque streets to one of the restaurants or stroll along the waterside. Take a selfie in one of the old street corners, near the water or at the characteristic Mauritshuis itself.
